The Glynn Academy Class of 1969 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established as a meaningful way for classmates to give back to their school while honoring those who are no longer with them. The idea began in 2008, as members of the Class of 1969 discussed ways to commemorate their 40th reunion. Rather than creating a physical tribute, the class chose to establish a scholarship fund that would provide lasting impact by helping deserving students pursue higher education. The decision to dedicate the fund in memory of their departed classmates was met with overwhelming support and became a central part of the initiative.
Through the leadership and commitment of classmates, including Morris Friedman, Tannis Winship Parker, Stewart Pittman, and others, the fund was organized and developed with the goal of creating a sustainable source of support for future students. After initially partnering with the Savannah Community Foundation to establish the fund and ensure proper management, the scholarship transitioned in 2016 to the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation, where it continues to be professionally administered and invested for long-term growth.
The mission of the fund is to provide an annual scholarship to a deserving Glynn Academy graduating senior who may not otherwise have the financial means to attend college. The scholarship is designed to support students who demonstrate determination and potential, including those whose academic performance may fall just short of qualifying for programs such as the Georgia HOPE Scholarship but who show strong character, skills, and financial need. By providing assistance during their first year of college, the fund aims to help recipients improve their academic standing and continue their education with greater opportunity.
Established as a permanent, endowed fund, the scholarship is intended to continue supporting students for generations to come. Contributions help grow the fund’s principal, allowing annual scholarships to be awarded through investment earnings while preserving the long-term sustainability of the program.
Donations from classmates, community members, and supporters play a vital role in ensuring the continued success of this effort. By contributing, donors help honor the memory of the Class of 1969, support deserving students, and invest in the future of the Glynn Academy community.
